What is the traditional Catholic greeting? ›

The simple greeting, therefore, “The Lord be with you” conveys a most profound truth. When the priest uses this greeting, the priest's words remind us that we are in the presence of God. Our gathering is not something that we do on our own. God himself is calling us together.

This Rite is celebrated only with candidates (those already baptized –usually in another Christian denomination—who are uncatechized and seeking reception into the full communion of the Catholic Church). The priest greets the candidates, expressing the joy of the Church. The candidates are introduced to the assembly.

Entering a Catholic Church

The first thing you'll see people doing is dipping their finger in some water and crossing themselves. This water has been blessed by a priest, and is called "holy water." Crossing yourself is done quite often by Catholics, so you should make sure you know how to do this.

The Structure of the Rite of Welcome is similar to the Rite of Acceptance, with the exception that the candidates do not gather outside or at the door of the church. Instead, the candidates begin the liturgy inside the Church, with the faithful.

The second option, “Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ,” comes from multiple places in the Bible, but primarily from Romans 1:7. The third and most common greeting, “The Lord be with you,” comes from Ruth 2:4.

Laudetur Jesus Christus or Laudetur Iesus Christus (Latin for 'Praised be Jesus Christ') is a traditional Catholic salutation, which members of religious communities commonly use, especially those of specific ethnicities.
